A Brief Introduction to SIG Sauer Firearms & All Models Listed

Founded in 1853 as Schweizerische Waggon Fabrik, SIG Hauer has always been associated with excellence and top engineering. Its firearms were immediately adopted by the Swiss army and gained notoriety all around the world in no time.

As the company evolved with modern technology, it created a wide variety of SIG Sauer pistol models, as well as rifles. Many of these releases have been adopted by armed forces, including the US Federal Air Marshals or the British SAS.

Like other firearm manufacturers, SIG Sauer has created certain models for the armed forces only, while many others are also available to the public. Given the popularity of the brand, some firearms have also made it to Hollywood.

To understand how diversified the range is, here is a list of SIG Sauer handguns and their main characteristics.

Pistols

SIG Sauer is particularly known for its impressive range of reliable pistols.

  • P210 was introduced in 2010. Like other models in the SIG Sauer line up, it has a few variants, such as Target, Super Target, and Carry. It has a 9x19mm caliber and has been through 11 prototypes before being released.
  • P220 was initially produced in 1975. There are more variants, with Sport and Carry being the top ones. P220 Match and 220R are not to be overlooked either. The pistol has been widely used in the cinema industry too.

The 9x19mm caliber has been discontinued, though, but you can still find P220 in 10mm auto and .45 ACP. Other calibers include .38 Super and 7.65x21mm Luger.

  • P224 is one of the SIG Sauer discontinued models, but the model still pops up for sale from private sellers. It's available in three calibers, 9x19mm, .40 S&W, and .357 SIG. The capacity varies, depending on the model. Popular variants include SAS, Equinox, Nickel, and Extreme.
  • P225 is among the popular SIG Sauer pistol models, produced between 1975 and 2000. The production was restarted in 2016, but only for four years. It has an eight round capacity and is only available in the 9x19mm caliber. Two variants were produced, P6 and P225-A1.
  • P226 is among the SIG Sauer 9mm models with the oldest production line. Introduced in 1984, it’s still being produced today. It comes in 9x19mm, .40 S&W and .357 SIG calibers, as well as >more variants. It’s identical to the P220 but modified to use double stack magazines.

Some of the main variants of P226 include:

  • P226R
  • Elite
  • Navy
  • E2
  • ZEV
  • Equinox
  • X-Five
  • SL Sport II
  • P227 is among the discontinued SIG Sauer.45 ACP models, being produced between 2013 and 2019 only, in three variants. The P227 is practically a P226, but adapted for the .45 ACP caliber. The pistol also features a few sizing changes in order to use a double stack magazine.
  • P228 comes in the 9x99mm caliber and two round capacities, 13 and 15. It was produced between 1989 and 1997. A new variant, M11-A1, was introduced in 2012, and it's still being produced these days.
  • P229 is a classic. SIG Sauer P229 models are compact and can handle the great velocity of calibers like .40 S&W and .357 SIG. It’s also available in the 9mm caliber. Introduced in 1991 and featuring more variants, it’s still in production today.
  • P230 has a seven round capacity and comes in the .380 ACP caliber. It’s one of the old SIG Sauer .380 models, as its production was stopped in 1996, after nearly two decades. The Blued, Two-Tone, and Stainless variants can still be found on the market from private sellers.
  • P232 has a 3.6 inch long barrel and two capacities, eight for the .32 ACP caliber and seven for the .380 ACP caliber. It’s been featured in numerous movies, but despite its popularity, the production ceased in 2015.
  • P238 was introduced in 2009. SIG Sauer P238 models are quite popular and still being made today. The .380 ACP pistol is a small frame semi-automatic unit. It’s very similar to Colt Mustang and comes in all kinds of variations. It was SIG Sauer’s first serious shot at the CCW market.
  • P239 is another classic, made between 1996 and 2018. The pistol was made in three calibers, 9x19mm, .40 S&W, and .357 SIG. It was similar in size and weight to the P232.
  • P245 was produced between 1998 and 2006, but it didn’t gain as much popularity as other top releases. The .45 ACP pistol was replaced by P220 variants. There were multiple complaints about its short grip, so it was a bit awkward to hold.
  • P250 was made for a decade, until 2017. It came in more variants, full size, compact, and subcompact. The full size option came with four calibers, 9x19mm, .45 ACP, .40 S&W, and .357 SIG. The other two variants didn't use .357 SIG.
  • P320 came to life in 2014. SIG Sauer P320 models are strike fired semi-automatic handguns and represent a serious upgrade from the P250 model. The handguns were quickly adopted by local armed forces. It comes in 9mm, 10mm Auto, .357 SIG, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP calibers.
  • P365 is made in 9x19mm and .380 ACP calibers, featuring 10, 12, 15 of 17 rounds. SIG Sauer P365 models have been in production since 2018 and boost different variants, such as XL, SAS, P365X, P365-380, or P365-XMACRO. Each variant has slight modifications.
  • P938 is a semi-automatic pistol with a single action only. It’s available in the 9mm caliber and has a three inch barrel length.
  • Pro SP2009 didn’t have a very long lifespan, being produced between 1999 and 2002 only. The semi-automatic pistol weighs about 1.6 pounds and has a 3.9 inch long barrel. It’s available in the 9mm caliber and has a 15 round capacity.
  • Pro SP2340 was produced between 1998 and 2002. The .357 SIG caliber was the most popular one, but it was also available in 9x19mm and .40 S&W.

Pro SP2022 is the only pistol in the Pro series that has managed to survive. Introduced in 2002, when the others were stopped, it’s still being made today. You can find it in 9x19mm, .357 SIG, and .40 S&W calibers.

The pistol was introduced as a compact and lightweight alternative to classic SIG Sauer pistol models. It was produced in more generations and variants too. The demand for this type of pistol was huge back then, while the market was extremely competitive.

The Mosquito is a blowback operated pistol with semi-automatic operation. In terms of looks, it’s based on the P226. However, it’s about 10% smaller. Also, it works with the .22 LR cartridge.

Originating from Germany and introduced in 2003, the pistol is no longer made, but it’s still available for sale here and there. It has an aluminum-zinc slide, and the frame is based on polymer.

Finally, SIG Sauer 1911 models are not to be overlooked either when it comes to pistols. Originally known as GSR (Granite Series Revolution), these pistols are easy to identify because of their outstanding slide profile.

The first models were very similar to the M1911 model from Colt. They were introduced in 2004 and are still manufactured today in .45 ACP, 10mm Auto, .357 SIG, 9x19mm, and .380 ACP calibers. Some of the most popular variants include:

SIG Sauer 1911 models were quickly introduced by armed forces from all over the world, including Portugal, Argentina, and the USA.

M17 and M18 pistols were introduced in 2017. The service pistols are used by the US Armed Forces.

Submachine guns

SIG Sauer has only created one submachine gun, the MPX model. The gas operated release was initially chambered in the 9x19mm Parabellum. It stands out because it has a closed, rotating bolt. All these features are uncommon in submachine guns.

However, they add to the overall reliability, as well as the safety standards. Produced in 2013, it came out in 2016. The second generation allows converting from 9mm to .40 S&W or .357 SIG.

Some of the top variations include:

  • Standard MPX
  • MPX-K, compact
  • MPX-SD, suppressed
  • Pistols, like Pistol, PSB and MPX-K
  • MPX-C, carbine

Rifles

Compared to other firearm manufacturers, SIG Sauer hasn’t produced as many rifles. However, all SIG Sauer AR pistol models stand out with their reliability and superior engineering. Moreover, they’ve been widely used by armed military forces from more countries.

SIG556 is one of the discontinued SIG Sauer AR pistol models. Produced for almost a decade until 2016, it came in a bunch of variants:

  • DMR
  • SWAT
  • SIG556R
  • SIX556xi
  • P556

All SIG Sauer 556 models had a 30 round capacity and the 5.56x45mm NATO caliber.

The MCX comes in more variants:

MCX-Spear was introduced in 2022 with the 6.8x51mm FURY caliber. You can also find it with 6.5 Creedmoor and 7.62x51mm NATO calibers.

Finally, the CROSS is a bolt-action model aimed at hunters. It excels at precision and reliability.

Sniper rifles

The SSG 3000 is the only sniper rifle developed by SIG Sauer. It comes with a 7.62x51mm NATO caliber and a five round capacity. The high quality sniper has a bolt action and represents the top option for law enforcement.

It’s available in two barrel lengths. The quick change option is by far the most recognizable feature of this reliable sniper rifle.

Machine guns

Mainly focused on pistols, SIG Sauer has only produced two types of machine guns.

  • MG 338 is a medium option, mainly chambered in .338 Norma Magnum. It can shoot both automatic and semi-automatic fire and relies on the AR style grip. The maximum firing range goes up to 6,170 yards, but the effective range rarely exceeds 1,860 yards.
  • LMG works with 6.8x51mm FURY and 7.62x51mm NATO. It’s not a machine gun. In fact, both guns produced by SIG Sauer are in the prototype stage, so there's still room for improvement. The LMG was initially introduced in 2019.

Apart from their type classification, the SIG Sauer line up can also be classified by caliber or size:

  • Semi-automatic pistols can be full size, compact size, micro compact, or modular
  • Rifles can be bolt-action, automatic or semi-automatic

SIG Sauer System

While not necessarily a firearm, it’s worth noting the SIG Sauer System too. It was used in self-loading guns and used in more firearms. Its role is to make firearms more reliable and effective, while also keeping manufacturing costs low.

The original design has been copied and used by other manufacturers all over the world. Similar designs are found in other brands too, yet SIG Sauer came up with the original idea. Introduced in 1975, it was first used for the P220 handgun and became a standard in no time.
